Online Strategy

My online presence will be conducted through the social media platforms, Instagram and through podcasting on SoundCloud. My creative piece will focus on clowns, through clowns I’ll devise a small mythology surrounding clowns as they are feared, which is a point of interest to a lot people. As online there are communities dedicated to creatures that our feared or icons of horror. As well, there is a cult following for creepy and mysterious creatures these communities follow trends like ‘SCPs’ and cryptids, which are forums that create unique creatures, which give them a small mythology and background.

I’ll use Instagram as a visual medium as well as a medium with a text function as well. So, the medium will be used for the posting of my poems, as the visual side of the platform will engage the general populous of the sight, and when they click on the photo, the caption will reveal the poems that are connected to the photo. The poems are relatively short which will suit the medium, as most of the viewer base look for minimal text, but maximum engagement of visuals. I aim to use the platform in a way which won’t turn off the usual user of the platform but will treat them to something unusual for the medium as the true content is in the caption. There is a community on Instagram of people who focus on aesthetic photos, but part of the aesthetic is constructed through the caption, so my style of presentation on the platform though uncommon, is not too obscure to not be

engaging for the users of Instagram.

My podcast though it links to my poems, I wanted to separate the two, so that I had multiple platforms to network through. This also gives my followers and listeners a way to engage with both sites and engage with two sperate but related products, which is beneficial for me as a creator as they are looking at double the amount of work that I am offering.

The multiple platforms are also good, as it provides two separate mediums, one being audio the other text and visual. This is positive as it less likely to bore my audience, as they have a variety to choose from. The podcast also offers content which is supplementary to my poems, so that if analysis and commentary is not a follower’s interest, they do not have to engage with it, as they have a choice to engage with a visual medium instead and the platforms are separate therefore their feed will not be crowded with content they do not enjoy. The separation of platforms is also beneficial as a podcast and Instagram are very different, and to force my readership to engage with both at once is not wise as the websites themselves do not cater for one what the offers, e.g. SoundCloud is not a visual medium and Instagram doesn’t cater to lengthy products.
